So, yesterday was the 2nd install-a-thon that the LUG has put on. It went fairly well except for some networking problems.

Today, beginning at noon, the Michigan Tech LUG (Linux Users Group) will be putting on an install-a-thon in the MUB.
If you’re at all interested, stop by and talk to us about Linux. If you’re ready, bring your computer by, and we’ll help you install it. We are providing backup services, we’ll resize your windows partition so that you can still use it if need be, and we are putting on presentations!
The presentations will be in the Peninsula room (next to the Corner Store) in the MUB.

So, crawl out of bed, and join us from noon to 6pm in the MUB for a good time, whether you just want to talk about Linux, or install it with the help of the LUG members.
Well, I got up this morning, and what do I find? A computer that won’t let me log in and a terminal full of spam about /dev/hda6 errors.
So, after trying to fix it with a Knoppix disk and e2fsck, I end up reinstalling the OS and making use of my backups to get things set back up.
All in all, about 3 hours worth of work (although WordPress took up the last hour of it). The annoying thing is that I didn’t have a backup of the mysql database, so I lost the previous posts, but I’ll try to reconstruct them.

Well, Gmail has done it again – upped the ante in the free webmail world.
This morning, on their 1 year anniversary, they have upped their limit from 1 gigabyte to 2 gigabytes. What’s more, they’ve made a commitment to keep upping the storage.
Now, the other webmail services are still making their way to 1 gig, Hotmail is at 250 megabytes, Yahoo! is also at 250… kinda makes you wonder why they aren’t following.
Following tradition that dates back to it’s founding (when they misspelled the domain name when registering – hence we have Google) they’ve found a funny way of announcing the update. Not only the infinity+1 joke, but the number under “The gift that keeps on giving.” section is a counter that is moving up to the new limit over the course of the day. And when you log in… you’re shown that number (truncated of course) as your limit.
