amaroK and FreeNX

Tonight, I set up amaroK and FreeNX. You can find them both mentioned in the latest Linux.ars article.

amaroK

amaroK is a KDE music app that is reminiscient of iTunes or Rhythmbox, but with more features. It tells you when you last played a song, when it was first played, how many times it has been played, and even recommends other songs based on what you’re listening to.

Lyrics can be viewed through the playlist window and your recent playlist can be pulished on the internet through Audioscrobbler. Free registration, email not required. My profile can be found here.

To install amaroK for Ubuntu, here’s what you need to do:
sudo apt-get install amarok amarok-xine

Install-a-thon

So, yesterday was the 2nd install-a-thon that the LUG has put on. It went fairly well except for some networking problems.

Here’s the main floor where the installing was taking place:

Here’s Tim Carmean (Chong) giving a presentation.

Linux Install-a-thon

Today, beginning at noon, the Michigan Tech LUG (Linux Users Group) will be putting on an install-a-thon in the MUB.

If you’re at all interested, stop by and talk to us about Linux. If you’re ready, bring your computer by, and we’ll help you install it. We are providing backup services, we’ll resize your windows partition so that you can still use it if need be, and we are putting on presentations!

The presentations will be in the Peninsula room (next to the Corner Store) in the MUB.

12:00pm – Timothy Carmean with Getting started with Linux(and the Linux Desktop)

1:30pm – Jon Devree with Networking

3:00pm – Steve Isaacson with Web applications/Scripting

4:30pm – Mary Farmer and Andy Zobro with MythTV (Home built PVR)

So, crawl out of bed, and join us from noon to 6pm in the MUB for a good time, whether you just want to talk about Linux, or install it with the help of the LUG members.

Sometimes, life hates me

Well, I got up this morning, and what do I find? A computer that won’t let me log in and a terminal full of spam about /dev/hda6 errors.

So, after trying to fix it with a Knoppix disk and e2fsck, I end up reinstalling the OS and making use of my backups to get things set back up.

All in all, about 3 hours worth of work (although WordPress took up the last hour of it). The annoying thing is that I didn’t have a backup of the mysql database, so I lost the previous posts, but I’ll try to reconstruct them.

EDIT: The Gmail post from earlier this morning has been reposted.
