Reinstall progress

A few things still aren’t working, so I’m popping up a post more as a reminder to myself on what’s left and how I fixed things more than anything.

SWAT

The Samba Web Administration Tool isn’t working for some reason. Whenever I attempt to connect to localhost:901 I get an error message that says:

The connection was refused when attempting to contact localhost:901

I’ve added the necessary lines to /etc/inetd.conf and /etc/services so I’m a bit confused on this one.

/etc/inetd.conf:

swat stream tcp nowait.400 root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/swat

/etc/services:

swat 901/tcp #swat

Yeah, I broke it.

Last night I made an attempt at upgrading my desktop/webserver from Ubuntu’s Breezy Badger release to the current development branch, Dapper. As anyone who tried to visit my website over the past 24 hours can probably figure out, it didn’t go too well.

I was able boot back into Gnome, however my machine would no longer recognize my network card. Seeing as I didn’t have the kernel sources installed, compiling a new one was out of the question and I decided it would be quicker to reinstall than to fix whatever was broken. Unfortunately, I failed to get a listing of all the packages I had installed so I’ve had to piece things back together.

So, after a fresh Breezy install and most of tonight reconfiguring things, I have my computer most of the way back to normal. We’ll see how much I’ve forgotten in the coming days.

LUG Install-a-thon

The MTU LUG had it’s biannual install-a-thon this past Saturday. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a very large turnout. We did get Linux installed on a couple of people’s computers, though we ran into problems with the Suse installer.

Oh well, here’s hoping the next one in the fall, accompanied by the normal number of presentations will generate some more interest.

Site Downtime

Sorry to everyone about the recent downtime. Friday, my housemate that owned the router moved out, so there was significant downtime that day.  Yesterday and today have seen a few problems with the hardware that was used to replace the router (we’re now running off a commodity Motorola router).  My housemate that administers the network is looking around for a better option, but until then, there will probably be times when the site is unavailable.

Google Adsense

So, as some of you may have noticed, my blog is now sporting Adsense (and has been for about a month now) , Google’s ads. I’m going text only, so hopefully it doesn’t prove to be too annoying for anyone reading this.

I didn’t get too many clicks until December rolled around. Through today, Adsense has earned me about $15. That’s 39 ads clicked and I’m paid an average of $0.84 per click. While I’m not earning as much money as some of those people who actually live off of their Adsense revenue, it might pay the bill for my new cell phone this month, which isn’t bad in my eyes.

Adsense was pretty easy to set up too. It took about 10 minutes to register an account and about a day later, I got a test debit to my checking account (though you can also opt for a check in the mail). Actually implement the ads on the website was pretty easy too. On this site, I just dropped a chunk of javascript into a CSS file and poof!, Google ads. On my Foamy mirror, I did have to go through and put the javascript on each page (I just mirror it for a guy, so I’m not redesigning it to use CSS, which I don’t know well enough for that task). If anyone is interested in setting it up on their site and has trouble, let me know.

For the rest of you, have a heart, click the occassional ad and make some money for me at no cost to you.
